MAPPING DENMARK III
MAPPING DENMARK III
For more than three decades Danish glass designer, Pernille Bülow, who works and lives on the island of Bornholm in Denmark, has designed and created several bestsellers within contemporary Danish glass design. From 20th January 2018 Glasmuseet Ebeltoft will show a presentation of Bülow’s designs.
”Glass is a fascinating material. The contrast between soft, tractable hot glass and hard, cold glass never stops fascinating and inspiring me,” Pernille Bülow states. She also mentions current trends, demands and colours as important sources of inspiration, when new design ideas are transformed into glass.
Pernille Bülow has worked with glass in her own studio in Svaneke since 1989. Prior to this, she ran Snogebæk Glashytte, and since then her energy and enterprise has led her far, not only on the island of Bornholm but also abroad.
Pernille Bülow’s interest and flair for design is combined with a strong sense for business and over the years, Bülow has managed to focus on designs, which appeal to a broad audience and which can be produced at a price, equally appealing to many people. An example of this is ”Duo” – a candle holder for tea-candles. Over the years more than 50.000 have been sold. Other successful designs have followed such as the series of wine glasses known as ”Chess”, the ”squashed vases” and lately the lamps, which are known as ”Cloud lamps”. All of them created and sold in numerous copies and used in interior deroration in thousands of Danish homes.
Pernille Bülow was educated at Orrefors Glass School, Sweden, in 1982. She ran Snogebæk Glass Studio from 1985 until she established her own studio, Pernille Bülow Glas, in Svaneke on Bornholm, DK, in 1989. In 2003, Pernille started a new business concept in Snogebæk, Denmark, which among others trades Bülow Design and Bülow Jewellery. In 2005, Pernille Bülow started a ”Fair Trade” collaboration with single mothers in the Koforidua area in Ghana, who produce beads for jewellery, designed by Pernille. In 2009, she started the workshop concept “Pernille By You”, which gives people the opportunity to decorate and design their own glasses.
While Pernille Bülow’s designs have been represented in Glasmuseet’s shop for a long time, this exhibition is the first presentation of Bülow glass in the gallery.
The exhibition can be seen from 20th January 2018 until 8th April 2018.
The exhibition has kindly been supported by:

The presentation of Pernille Bülow is the third exhibition in the museum’s series ”Mapping Denmark”, which aims to map the development within Danish glass in a broad perspective. Past exhibitions in the series presented the glass studio collaboration “Luftkraft” and Britta Madsen & Søren Gøttrup in the exhibition ”Fake”.
