THE COSMIC SPACE
THE COSMIC SPACE
The renowned painter and sculptor, Tróndur Patursson from the Faroe Islands has been on a total of seven historical sea expeditions together with the British explorer and historian, Tim Severin. With The Brendan Voyage (1976-77), which was the first expedition, the crew proved that it was possible to sail from Ireland to America by sea in a boat made purely from wood and ox hides, just as Irish monks had done in the 6th century, according to legend.
In 1993, Tróndur Patursson and Tim Severin spent 106 days on a raft made of bamboo on a journey from China to USA. Totally isolated and only surrounded by the sky and the sea, they often stood in water up to their knees.
”On this long journey, where there is no sight of any other ships, you feel the rhythm of the sea and its power. You almost become part of it. With 6.000 metres of water under your feet and a never ending sky over your head, one gets the feeling of cosmic space,” Tróndur Patursson explains about this great journey.
With The Cosmic Space installation, it is this experience, that he attempts to pass on to the viewer.
Tróndur Patursson took art classes at Glyptoteket in Copenhagen, 1965-66. Graduated from The Norwegian School for Art & Craft, 1967-69, and The Academy of Art in Oslo, Norway, 1969-73. He has completed several public commissions on The Faroe Islands, among them the church in Gøta and the Catholic Church in Tórshavn. He has also carried out commissions in Altinget, Reykjavik, Iceland, and in Denmark in Tornbjerg Church, Odense, the multi storye parking building, Vejle, and at Sparekassen Kronjylland’s headquarters in Randers.
The installation has most kindly been donated by Ny Carlsbergfondet.
