BALTIC SEA GLASS

MAPPING DENMARK V – BALTIC SEA GLASS
MAIBRITT JÖNSSON & PETE HUNNER

Maibritt Jönsson and Pete Hunner have been part of Danish glass for almost four decades. In 1981, they opened their joint studio, Baltic Sea Glass, on the island of Bornholm near Østermarie and moved to a new address near the coast south of Gudhjem in 1991.

Over the years they have worked closely together creating simple glass designs with a personal touch such as Hammershus, Sildeben and Trebensvasen. Parallel to this, they have explored the aesthetic properties of glass through the making of various unique works.

From the very beginning Pete and Maibritt have been driven by a common passion for glass; a challenging material characterized by its unique interplay with light. They primarily find inspiration in nature and their close surroundings. Impressions of snowflakes, frost, feathers, beehives, fishing nets, wickerwork, the forest and their garden, the sky and the sea are transformed into glass with abstract patterns, varied surfaces and characteristic colour combinations.

This exhibition looks back on the couple’s collaboration and ’play’ with glass over four decades. From early experiments with glass to unique pieces and large scale sculptural works.

It is the fifth in the series of exhibitions entitled ‘Mapping Denmark’, which focuses on the development of studio glass in Denmark and presents notable glassmakers and studios.

The exhibition can be seen from 12th October 2019 – 22nd March 2020.

The exhibition has been supported by:
