THE GARDEN

THE GARDEN

The garden was designed by local artist and landscape architect Kjeld Slot (owner of Ellipsehaverne in Hyllested) taking into account the classical custom’s house made by renowned Danish architect Hack Kampmann in 1921 and 3xN’s modern building from 2006.

The basic design of the garden is built up in a simple system of squares, which suits the classic lines of both buildings. In total there are 13 individual flower beds, planted with a variety of herbs and flowers such as roses, Himalaya birches and parsley. There are also three larger beds planted with meadow grasses and flowers.

The local garden society, Syddjurs Havekreds, helps keep the garden throughout the year.

Søren Ryge’s flower bed
Søren Ryge Pedersen, known in Denmark for his popular TV programmes about gardening, has planted one of the beds with his favorite flowers: Thalictrum delavayi, which are in full bloom June-August with purple flowers.

The rose beds
There are three rose beds in the garden. One is planted by rose gardener, Knud Pedersen from Aarhus in collaboration with Kjeld Slot, and two by rose gardener and expert on historical roses, Torben Thim from Løve (Zeeland):

One of the rose beds allegorizes The Virgin Mary – Rose of roses: “In the middle of the rosebed are five steel M’s – the oldest cryptogram symbolizing The Virgin Mary. This basically forms a pentagram – the oldest symbol for a rose. The rose planted inside the cryptogram is the red, thornless Rosa borbonica ‘Zephirine Drouhin’, which was improved by the French gardener Bizot in 1868. (‘Zephirine Drouhin’ was also the Danish Queen’s mother’s favorit rose.)

The roses, which surround The Virgin Mary are characterised by particularly strong thorns: Rosa omeiensis, found in 1890 more than 3000 metres up on the mountain Omei in China. The thorns on the young plants are shining red and transparent. Later they become grey, hard and sharp. The fact that the white flower is the only existing rose with only four petals, must be thought about and maybe grasped in a moment of clarity,” says Torben Thim. (June 2010)

Ghita’s rose bed
One of the rose beds has been made by Danish actress, Ghita Nørby, in collaboration with Torben Thim, who has named it “Ghita’s rose bed”. “Ghita” means “song” in Sanskrit. Songs connect us with each other, encourage us and spread joy, and this is exactly what the rose bed expresses. The rose bed has been formed as an umbrella with eight arms each of which let the rose ‘Alberic Barbier’ show its beautiful yellow flowers. The bud is yellow, which is the colour of Wisdom in Eastern countries. later the flower becomes white as the virgin song heard for the first time and with a sweet scent of apples.

Rosa Wichuraiana ‘Alberic Barbier’ was improved in 1900 in France by Barbier. The rose grows vigourously and with dark green leaves, which stays on the plant during mild winters. Beneath the espalier 1000 bulbs of Iris Reticulata have been planted, which in late winter in February-March will form a thick purple-blue sea, which should spread joy and expectations of the coming of Spring.” (Torben Thim, June 2010)
